What Profile Settings Impact My Referrals?

BetterHelp uses a computer-based matching algorithm to assist in finding the most appropriate member matches. This means that the more information the system has, the more approximate it can get to finding the best-fitting referrals.

The Expertise and Preferences section of your profile can assist the computer in the matching process. The sections listed mirror some of the questions members answer during their intake questionnaire.

Importantly, all of these selections can be adjusted in the future should you be interested in updating your inputs for the matching process or in adding/removing yourself from the sister sites.

Expertise

Although you may have experience working with all of the presenting concerns listed, the matching algorithm works best with a narrower focus on up to 5 areas of most experience. We encourage you to use the 'some experience' categorization to highlight those other presenting concerns you have experience working with outside of your top 5.

Populations

The 'Select the populations you'd like to work with' section correlates directly with our sister sites that serve each of the populations listed. If you are interested in working with any of these populations, through sister sites directly linked to your BetterHelp profile, we encourage you to make your selection.

Mark all that apply

During the member questionnaire, the system also takes into consideration important values, experiences, lifestyle choices, and belief systems that may increase the chances of an appropriate therapist-member match.

Modalities

We encourage therapists to be as flexible as they can with their Live Session modality options with members. Although video is the most popular request for communication on the platform, audio sessions and live chat can also be preferable to some members. We cannot guarantee that therapists will be matched with members based on their preferred communication style, so it is strongly encouraged to be available for all session modalities.

Additional clinical and focus areas

Have a favorite approach or extra training in a particular intervention? Consider narrowing down the matching options further by adding more specializations and expertise areas to your profile! Sometimes members reach out with specific requests, and our Member Success Advocates can scan for these requested expertise areas within our database to find potential matches.
